"May I achieve enlightenment (wisdom and compassion) for the benefit of all beings".
"May I always be able to develop the good qualities which will truly enable me to benefit all others.".
"Today I'm fortunate to have woken up, I'm alive, i have a precious human life, I'm not going to waste it. I'm going to use all my energies today to develop myself, to expand my heart out to others, to achieve enlightenment".
I am going to have kind thoughts towards others, I am not going to get angry, or think badly about others. I am going to benefit others as much as I can.

A WORD TO THE READER
This booklet was compiled a few years ago by the late Ven. Dharmakirti Sri Kamburupitiye Gunaratana Maha Nayaka Thero of Malaya and Singapore. It has been published several times by the voluntary Donors for free Distribution. Since the death of the venerable Nayaka Thera- on 19th January 1964- the demand for this booklet has been so great that it has necessitated the reprinting of the booklet once again.I hope that with this re-print the stocks will be replenished so that this booklet will be freely available to those in need of it. Concise through this publication may be, as a handbook it fulfills a longfelt need of the Buddhists of Malaysia. Herein are found important material that serves as an excellent guide to the Buddhist devotee enabling him to develop a strong sense of devotion based on knowledge thus leading him on the path towards Enlightenment. The Vandana Gathas or stanzas to be recited when paying homage or making offerings to the Blessed One should be committed to memory and recited at the appropriate time when an offering is made or homage is paid to the Master. The purpose of reciting these stanzas is to recall to our minds the sublime virtues of the Buddha, The Dhamma and the Sangha.

The three Suttas, MANGALA, RATANA AND KARANIYA METTA, included in this booklet are known as Parittas. (Protection Suttas) Every Buddhist should not only memorize these Suttas but should alsko know their meanings. The efficacy of these Parittas Suttas is such that when chanted daily with Saddha (Faith) it protects you from impending dangers, wards off evil spirits, saves you from calamities and disasters and in addition bring you good luck, blessings, peace of mind, happiness and success in all your undertakings. May this act of Dhamma-dana redound to those pious donors who have borne the cost of printing this book the Supreme Bliss of Nibbana.

6. I promise to abstain from taking food after midday.
7. I promise to abstain from dancing, singing, playing on music, seeing unseemly shows, using garlands, perfumes and other toiletries.
8. I promise to abstain from using high, grand and luxurious seats, beds and beddings.
When a person wants to observe Panca Sila or Atthanga Sila, as the case may be, in the absence of a Bhikku, he or she should repeat (to himself or herself) in order, first the "Vandana" ("Namo Tassa Bhagavato Arahato Samma-Sambuddhasa") three times, followed by "Tisarina" and then the Precepts. If such person is unable to repeat the Pali words, the correct meanings of the said precepts should be repeated in the same order. If this is even impossible. Such one should mindfully and with determination think to oneself thus:-
" I MUST this day observe the Five Precepts or Eight Precepts (as the case may be) as mentioned in the Doctrine of Lord Buddha." This should be done in a quiet and undisturbed place. Every Buddhist should endeavour to observe the "Five Precepts" daily, and the "Eight Precepts" at least once a week.

The procedure of requesting a BHIKKU to grant the observance of the said precepts can very easily be learnt from such Bhikkhus before whom such persons may wend their way.
Those who observe the " Eight Precepts" in particular should be very careful to strictly abstain from all thoughts and acts regarding, relating to and or aiding and abetting of the following:-
Hurting or causing to hurt another's feeling.
Indulgence in casual and all other evil thoughts.
Having anything to do with their occupation, or business matters, home matters, expenses in connection therewith or any other domestic matters, and strictly abide by the following:-
Meditation in a quiet and undisturbed place at home or in a "Viharasthana" monastery, or under a tree, and or engaging in talks relating to or listening to "DHAMMA" the Doctrine, like a Bhikkhu or a mendicant.
Salutation to BUDDHA
Iti pi so bhagava araham samma-sambuddho, vijja-carana sampanno sugato loka-vidu anuttaro purisa-dammasarathi sattha deva-manussanam, Buddho bhagavati.
He is the Lord, the Exalted One, free from bondage, fully enlightened, the Possessor of Knowledge and Power, gone to the Right Path, who realised

the true nature of the world, the Guide and Instructor of mankind the greatest Teacher of Gods and men - the BUDDHA
Salutation to DHAMMA
Svakkhato bhagavata dhammo sanditthiko akaliko ehi-passiko opanayiko paccattam veditabbo vinnuhiti.
The Doctrine fully explained by the Blessed One, which would bring them results that they themselves could see, which would cause immediate results in accordance with actions, which would become worthy examples to others, The wise who mindfully practise the Doctrine will themselves know to what extent the Doctrine has benefited them.
Salutations to SANGHA (The Order)
Supati-panno bhagavato savaka-sangho, ujupati-panno bhagavato savaka sangho, naya-pati-panno bhagavato savaka sangho, samici pati-panno bhagavato savaka sangho, yadidam cattari purisa yugani attha-purisa - punggala esa bhagavato savaka-sangho, aho neyyo, paho-neyyo, dakkhineyyo, anjali-karaniyo, anuttaram punnakkhettam lokasatti.
The Order of Lord Buddha (the BHIKKHUS) is of good conduct, of upright conduct, of wise conduct, of dutiful conduct. This Order is for four pairs that form the eight kinds called "Atthariya Puggala" (Those who attained the path and fruit of the Four-Noble-Truth) is worthy of offerings, of hospitality, of gift, of respectful salutation, who

is compared to the field to sow the seed of merits with.
Buddhe cittap-pasadena
Dhamme Sanghe ca yo naro,
Kappani sata sahassani,
Duggatim so na gacchati
He who takes refuge in the Buddha, The Dhamma (His Doctrine) and the Sangha (His Disciples) will not be born in a state of suffering for a hundred thousand world cycles.
Offering of Flowers
Pujemi Buddham kusumena nena,
Punnena me tena ca hotu mokkham;
Puppham milayati yatha idam me,
Kayo thatha yati vinasa-bhavam.
I offer Him the exalted One of the Lord Buddha, with these flowers. May this virtue will be helpful for my Emancipation. Our body undergoes decay as quickly as does these flowers fade away.
Offering of Light
Ghana-sarappa-dittenna,
Dipena Tama-dhansina;
Tiloka-dipam sambuddham,
Pujayami tamo-nudam.
I offer Him, the exalted One, the incomparable LIGHT of the three worlds, the light that dispels

the darkness, with this light that I now light.
Offering of Jossticks
Gandha-sambhara yuttena,
Dhupenaham sugandhina;
Pujaye Pujaniyam tam;
Puja bhajana muttanam.
I offer Him, the exalted one, the one deserved of offering, with this smoke of fragrance.
Offering of Water
Adhivasetu no bhante,
Paniyam pari-kappitam;
Anukampam Upadaya,
Patiganhatu muttamam.
O! Lord! The Exalted One, Please accept this water (strained and arrenged by us for the purpose of this offering) as an offering to Thee, Out of Great Compassion on us!
Offering of Food
Adhivasetu no bhante,
Bhojanam parikappitam;
Anukampam upadaya,
Patiganhatu muttamam.
O! Lord! The Exalted One, may this Food (provided and arranged by us in the rightful way) be kindly accepted by You, out of Great Compassion on us!

Adhivasetu no bhante,

Rectification of Faults
Kayena vaca cittena,
Pamadena maya katam;
Accayam khama me bhante,
Bhuri-panna tathagata!
O! Lord! The Exalted , The WISE ONE, May i be excused for any shortcomings on my part that may have been uncautiously committed by me by speech , thought or body!

In making all offerings to Lord Buddha, the "Upasaka" or "Upasika" must keep in mind that such offerings are not intended for the image of idol before them, but that they are for and in the name of the BLESSED ONE, THE ENLIGHTENED, whose existence should be imagines as present before them.
Salutation to Mother
Katvana Kaye rudhiram,
Khiram ya sneha-purita;
Payetva mam suvaddhesi,
Vande tam mama mataram.
I adore Thee my Mother, who, full of affections on me, fed me with your own blood turned into milk and brought me up to this position to-day.
Salutation to Father
Dayaya pari-punno va,
Janako yo pita mamam;
Posesi vuddhim karesi,
Vande tam pitaram mama.
I adore Thee my Father, who, full of affection on me,
brought me up to this position to-day leaving undone everything that you could do for me.
To make Devas (Gods) Participate in merits
Etta-vata ca amhehi,
Sambhatam punna-sampadam;
Sabbe deva anumodantu,
Sabba sampati siddhiya.

May all Devas participate in the merits we have accrued by these offerings and or other all good actions for the benefit of all. Bliss to them all!
To make "Nati's" (Relations who passed away to participate in Merits)
Idam wo natinam hotu,
Sukhita hontu natayo.
May all "Nati's" participate in the merits we have accrued, and the same be helpful for them to be freed from any sorrow that they may be suffering from!
"MANGALA SUTTA" "RATANA SUTTA" "KARANIYA METTA SUTTA"
The under mentioned three Suttas should be committed to memory by every Buddhist, understanding their correct meaning and they should try to bring their noble teachings into practice, which wards off all evils. These Suttas should be repeated by every Buddhist in the course of his daily religious routine.
As a great benefit can be accrued by such a practice, both the Pali text and their tranlsations are given below for the benefit of all who would care to read, hear and practise them.

MANGALA SUTTA
Ewam me sutam ekam samayam bhagawa sawatthiyam viharati Jetawane Anatha-pindikassa arame. Atha-kho annatara dewata abhikkantaya rattiya abhikkanta-vanna kewala kappam Jetawanam obhasetva yena bhagava tenupasankami. Upasankamitva bhagawatam abhivadetva ekamantam atthasi. Eka-mantam thita kho sa devata bhagavantam gathaya ajjhabhasi.

Mangalani acintayum;
Akankha-mana sotthanam,

MANGALA SUTTA - Translation.
Once, Lord Buddha was staying at JETAWANA Temple built by a very rich piuos devotee named Anatha Pindika at Sawatthi now known as Sahet Mahet in Northern India. Then, some one known as Devata ( a mamber of Deity) illuminating the whole temple premises with the glare of the rays of his body, approached Lord Buddha at the dead of night. Paying due respect and homage to the Enlightened One, he laid before him the following question:-
1. Many gods and men, desirous of benefitting themselves, thought as to what are blissful, but none of them could come to a decision. Therefore, O! Lord! may you please tell me what blissful are! The Lord replied:-
2. Not to associate with the unwise, to associate with the wise (who are rich with virtuosness and all good deeds and thoughts) , to respect the respectable- It is most blissful.

3. To reside at favourable place (where good and virtuous people live), merits, gained in the past, to be instated in good pre-requisites - It is most blissful.
4. To be well-read and instructed in arts;
To be of well-disciplined behaviours;
To be possessed of pleasant words and speech -
It is most blissful.
5. To honour, respect, support and attend on Parents;
To look after, feed and take care of a wife and children;
To be engaged in un-disputed undertakings;
It is most blissful.
6. Practising charity and behave in accordance with Dhamma;
To help in the relations;
To engage in undertakings of a righteous nature;
It is most blissful.
7. Absoulte abstinence from committing evil deeds;
Freed from intoxicating things, well controlled for the activities of body and words;
Be Heedful in virtuous deeds;
It is most blissful.
8. To respect and honour those who deserve them and to be submissive,

To be contented and grateful;
To listen to and learn the Dhamma at such times that requires a checking on thoughts;
It is most blissful.
9. To observe Patience and Obedience;
To make the sight of Bhikkus pleasant;
To be engaged in religious discussions at such times, that require a checking on thoughts;
It is most blissful.
10. To try and arrest passion;
To practise "Brahmacariya" the abstinence from the association with opposite sex;
To realise the four noble truths;
To attain NIBBANA;
It is most blissful.
11. To be well balanced in the "Attha-Loka Dhamma" or the law of the worldly changes;
Not to feel sorrow;
Not to be addicted to lust and passion;
To be calm and quiet in everything;
It is most blissful.
12. The One who practises the above mentioned Blessings fearlessly at every stage will never be beaten out, hence such one will everywhere gain everything good and virtuous and thus become the gainer of Blessings of the highest esteem.

RATANA SUTTA
This sutra was preached by LORD BUDDHA at Visala Maha Nuwara, which at that time was raging with epidermic fears, famine fears etc., etc.
After the preaching was over a large number of those who listened to His Dhamma gained fruits of the Noble-Eight-Fold-Path and the fears that prevailed in that part of the country all vanished.
We have endeavoured our best efforts to furnish herein an English tranlastion of the said SUTTA as far as possible.
We recommend to all Upasaka, Upasikas (Followers of Lord Buddha, of either sex) to commit to memory the Pali verses side by side with the meanings, to be repeated before going to bed every night, by way of meditation and or in case of illness etc., of others also.
RATANA SUTTA
1. Yanidha bhutani samagatani
Bhummaniva yaniva antalikkhe;
Sabbeva bhuta sumana bhavantu,
Athopi sakkacca sunantu bhastam.
2. Tasmahi bhuta nisametha sabbe
Mettam Karotha manusiya pajaya
Divaca rattoca haranti ye balim
Tasmahi ne rakkhatha appa-matta.

Saggesu vayam ratanam panitam
Nanosamam atthi tathagatena

RATANA SUTTA - Translation
1. May all DEVAS (gods) who have assembled herein either on earth or up in the space, be of devoted minds! May they hear well my DHAMMA.
2. Therefore, Thee gods, listen to my DHAMMA, practise great compassion on all human beings; Take Heedful care of those men, who according to their beliefs, honour and offer thee day and night with offerings.
3. If there are any GEMS that may attract the minds of living beings in the whole Universe, There could be none such, that could be compared to Buddha Ratna - the GEM of Buddha; This noble quality is found in Lord Buddha; By this Truth may all beings be Happy and Blissful!
4. If the Enlightened One did find a way, free from all lust and passion, that leads to "NIBBANA," there cannot exist any GEM in the whole Universe that can equal this;
This nobility if found in DHAMMA - His teachings;
By this Truth may all beings be Happy and Blissful!

5. There is no 'Jhana"-(Ecstasy) in the whole Universe to equal the DHAMMA based on the Noble-Eight-Fold-Path; This nobility is found in DHAMMA;
By this Truth may all beings be Happy and Blissful!
6. Those eight noble saints (At thariya Puggala) the disciples of the Buddha- Who can be put in four pairs, (THE ORDER or SANGHA) are worthy of honour and worship; Anything offered to them yields high merits; (Sanghika Danas come under this class)
This nobility is found in "SANGHA" the Order;
By this Truth may all beings be Happy and Blissful!
7. The Noble Monks, who with strict determination and undying energy in them, strictly adhering to and abiding by all the Pre-Requisites taught them by Buddha, attain Nibbana after conquering Lust and Passion;
This nobility if found in "SANGHA" the Order;
By this Truth may all biengs be Happy and Blissful!
8. As the stone pillar that is well planted in the

earth, cannot be shaken by any wind from any side, the mind of the monk who attains the fruit of even the first Noble Path cannot be changed by wrong beliefs;
This mobility is found in "SANGHA" the order;
By this Truth may all beings be Happy and Blissful!
9. Those eight noble saints At thariya of the Noble-Eight-Fold-Path, will not be born more than seven times;
This nobility is found in "SANGHA" the Order;
By this Truth may all beings be Happy and Blissful!
10. The monk who attains or reaps the first fruit described above, destroys "Sakkaya Ditthi" (selfish desire and egoism) he destroys "Vicikiccha" (Doubt about the Triple Gem etc.) he destroys "Silabbata Paramasa" - Indulgence in wrong beliefs and practices). Such persons will never be born in bad places, will never commit serious evil deeds such as killing parents, killing sanctified ones, etc , etc.

11. The person of the above mentioned description will never hide even the slightest mistake that may have been committed by accident; Why so? Because , such person, has already realised the Four-Noble-Truths, with the aid of the eye of Wisdom;

12. The "DHAMMA" that leads one to "NIBBANA" as taught by Buddha is compared to a garden of flowers beautified by the summer blossoms during the first month of the season;

13. "Buddha" the unrivalled, who found out the Noble-Eight-fold-Path, by his own personal experience, showed unto others the way to attain the same;

14. Arhats or Saints, of desires being exhausted up, not creating new ones, fully detached-minded for self existence, patiently destroying all seeds (of desire) making the growth of temptations impossible, attained NIBBANA - as the lamp (put out) extinguished
This noblity is found in "SANGHA" the Order;
By this Truth may all beings be Happy and Blissful!
Lord Buddha thus ended His Sermon.
Then, "SAKKA" the King of gods who was so much delighted after hearing the above "SUTTA" paid homage to the Triple Gem and wished all beings happiness and bliss by uttering the last thiree verses of this "SUTTA" as follows:-
15. Hail, from us all who are on earth or up in the air, to HIm the Enlightened One, who is adored by all gods and men.

KARANIYA METTA SUTTA
Occasion arose for Lord Buddha to preach the above Sutta to an assembly of about 500 Bhikkhus. They had approached Him with a complaint to the effect that they were being obstructed to a great extent by some gods (Devatas) in the jungle region, where the said Bhikkhus stayed and practised meditation.
"O! Bhikkhus!" said Lord Buddha in reply -
"Thee, who went unarmed with the sword of "Metta" were put to fear and obstructed. Be Heedful and be armed with this "sword" now! and go back to the same place for your meditations." The five hundred over Bhikkhus did so, with the result, the very

Devatas who first obstructed them or frightened them, now gradually came on their way proferring and offering them, with each and every of their requirements.

KARANIYA METTA SUTTA - Translation
"One, wise in attaining one's end should attain the path of the NPBLE ONES- THE ONLY PATH that leads one to Nibbana. Such one should fulfill PRE-REQUISITES, the observance of which, in short , are as follows:-

"Become clever in the practice of meditation, be straight, be very straight, be obedient, be soft hearted, be devoid of pride, be contented, be satisfactorily provided with, be not devoted in futile efforts, be of a non-luxurious life spent, be of peaceful demeanour, be of ripe wisdom, be devoid of useless bodily and verbal actions, be un-attached in caste or creed, be a non-doer of even a slight thing that could be looked upon with contempt by the wise, be of a compassionate mind on all living beings, and extend METTA- LOVING KINDNESS, thus:-
"May all living creatures and beings, possessed of passion or not possessed of passion, taking all such creatures and beings as a whole, whether long bodied or huge bodied or medium size bodied, whether visible or not, whether living near by or far away, whether already born, to be born, or are being born, be freed from sorrow! Be freed from suffering! And be happiness-full!
"May one at no place be deceived by another, be hurt by another, be disgraced by another! May the One or the other be free from sorrow caused by one another's cruel bodily and verbal action or thought! Just as the mother who would take all care of her child considered greated than her own life, in the same way May the one extend "METTA" (loving kindness) in comparable and unlimited loving kindness

on all beings and creatures!
"May the one whose mindful-great-loving-kind compassion, that observes equanimity towards them all friends and foes (who may have some animosity or friendship towards one or the other, as the case may be) be extended on all living beings and creatures, that exists in the whole Universe in every direction such as above, beneath, around or within!
"May the one, who may be seated, standing, waliking or in motion otherwise, or lying at ease and as long as awake PRACTISE in one's mind this "METTA" great-loving-kind-compassion!
"Great Noble Exalted Ones like BUDDHAS have said, spoken of, and personally practised this "METTA" explained above, as the NOBLEST CONDUCT.
"As "METTA" in respect of human beings and animals in particular, may stand the possibility of being trespassed upon by "EGOISM" ("I" ness or "my" ness) the PRACTISER should take particular care to be freed from this view and base thoughts and mind entirely on the Four-Noble-Truths. Such PRACTISER freed from Tanha (Craving or desire) will positively be freed from any sort of conception or re-birth, and thus attain the goal Nibbana.

Saddha dhanam Sila dhanam
Hiri ottappiyam dhanam
Suta dhanam ca cago ca;
Panna me sattamam dhanam
The confidence and unflinching daith in doing meritorious deeds,
The establishment of oneself in noble precepts;
Being ashamed of doing wicked and sinful deeds;
Being afraid of doing wicked and sinful deeds;
The acquirement of Knowledge, Generosity and Wisdom. These Seven Factors make the Noble Seven-fold Wealth of Man.
"KAYA-GATA SATI"
MINDFULNESS ABOUT BODY
This physical human body is not built of any valuable articles or metal like pearls or gems or gold or silver, but of thirty two degenerating components such as bones, skin, flesh, veins, blood, phelgm, snot, pus, etc., etc. Therefore it is compared to an externally well painted pot full of excreta.
Therefore O Upasaka, Upasikas! This body which is the home of all diseases, fear, etc., on which death may fall today or tomorrow one is not certain of, is an object of utter contempt. Even the mind that exists on account of this body has no soul. As this body and mind are subject to existence and destruction; as their impermanence causes

various sorrow quite contrary to one's wish; may you all meditate on it, with your thoughts based on its soulessness, its sorrowfulness, its impermanence; to destroy all sorrow that will be met within the great cycle of Samsara and attain Nibbana!
For the purpose of meditation please repeat thus:- "Atthi Imasmim Kaye Kesa, Atthi Imasmim Kaye Loma; Atthi Imasmim Kaye Nakka" and so on, adding the words "Atthi Imasmim Kaye" before the Pali term of every component part. "Imasmim kaye" = In this body, "Atthi" - There is. This means - this body is composed of:-

2. Loma - Hair on the body.
3. Nakha - Nails.
4. Danta - Teeth.
5. Taco - skin.
6. Mansam - Flesh.

9. Atthi-Minja - Marrow of the bones.
10. Vakkam - Kidneys.
11. Hadayam - Heart.
12. Yakanam - Liver.
13. Kilomakam - Pleura

Let us now give a brief description of the said thirty two components parts of the body:-
1. Kesa This is the hair on the head, which we all know and see.
2. Loma This is the hair found scattered on all other parts of the body excepting the head, palms and soles.

3. Nakha These are the twenty nail-cups bound by flesh at the tips of the fingers and toes.
4. Danta These are the thirty two dental bones of one who has a full set of teeth, planted in the upper and lower jars in various shapes.
5. Taco this is the thick hide that covers the whole body from top to bottom.
6. Mansam This is the flesh, divided into nine hundred portions, red in colour and odourless like the "KIMSUKA" flower.
7. Naharu These are the nine hundred sinews or "Body-Sustainers" interwining over the body, all white in colour and of various shapes, dastened on to the bones.
8. Atthi These are the bones, three hundred in number, that composes the framework of the body with one hundred and eighty joints.
9. ATthi-Minja This is the marrow found inside the bones like the putrified kernel of the tender cane bamboo.
10. Vakkam These are the kidneys or two pieces of flesh bound by a single tie- a thick sinew, like a pair of mangoes clinging to a common stalk.
11. Hadayam This is the heart, in relation to which exist mind and thought, like a lotus bud hang-

ing from its stem. Externally even but inside like that of a bottle-gourd, a little opened in that of Pannawanta or a wise person and containing about half a handful of blood in a small cavity.
12. Yakanam This is the liver or a pair of fleshy membranes, pale red in colour, like the sea coral leaf in shape - single at the root and double the tip lying on the right side of the heart.
13. Kilomakam This is the pleura of the white fleshy membrane that envelops the heart.
14. Pihakam This is the spleen or the flesh of the tongue of the stomach, like the toungue of a black calf lyingon the left of the heart.
15. Papphasam These are the lungs that hand inside between the breasts, full of holes like the holey "Puva" - (a food preparation like cakes full of holes).
16. Antam These are the intestines or bowels thirty two cubits long in a man and twenty eight cubits in a woman, folded in twenty one places, like a beheaded snake folded up in a tough of blood, extending from the bottom of the gullet to the anus.
17. Antagunam This is the mesentery or the intestinal tract. The binding together of the intestines

in the places where they are coiled up, lying withi the twenty one intestinal coils.
18. Udariyam This is the stomach or the food store which we al know; to satisfy whose hunger every living being strives in so many different ways - rightful and otherwise.
19. Karisam This is the excreta or the refuse emitted from the stomach.
20. Pittam This is the bile that lies between the liver and the lungs, like a mass of condensed ghee inside a bottle-gourd.
21. Sembam This is the phlegm sometimes emitted through the mouth lying in a region between the stomach and the throat like the matter in a rotten egg.
22. Pubbo This is the pus or matter formed from impure blood.
23. Lohitam This is the blood , that in circulation, being of a light red, and that not in circulation being of a dark red colour.
24. Sedo This is the perspiration or sweat, that oozes out from the roots of loma.
25. Medo This is the fat or congealed viscous floud found between the flesh and the skin.
26. Assu This is what we call tears. This is caused either by a violent contact with the eye muscles,

or by sorrow or by excessive pleasure. A peculiarity that could be observed in this, is a hot condition in the tears caused by sorrow, and a cold condition in that caused by pleasure.
27. Vasa This is what we call sweat on the palms soles, fore-head or round the shoulder blades, usually caused by the heat of the sun or fire.
28. Khelo This is what we call saliva or watery secretion through the nose caused by grief or by taking an unbearably hot food.
29. Singhnika This is snot or watery secretion through the nose caused by the grief or by taking an unbearably hot food.
30. Lasika This is synovia or the slippery putridity found in the bone jointsthat acts more or less like a lubricant for the joints. A peculiarity that could be observed in this is a cracking noise in the joints due to depreciation of this fluid.
31. Muttam This is the urine held up in the bladder.
32. Mattha-lungam This is the brains, filled up in the skull of the head.
This body of ours that excretes from nine outlets everything that is unpleasant to the eye and nose in a mindless (unsympathethic) manner is composed of thirty two parts including a Mind- "Hadayam"

which even cannot be called "I" or mine. It was born in a region, of excreta in the mother's womb, it contain excreta now; it is the region of birth, the home, the play ground, the hospital,the food, the lavatory, the grave yard and then again the birth place for worms of eighty families as their own share of inheritance.
O upasaka, Upasikas! please try to meditate on this "Kaya Gata Sati", be mindful about it and realize the difference between our claiming this body as ours and the said worms claiming it as theirs by inheritance.
Patthana - The Aspiration
Imina punna kammena,
Mame bala samagamo,
Satam samagamo hotu,
Yava nibbana pattiya.
By the grace of this merit that I have acquired may I never meet the foolish; but only the wise up to the time I atttain final happiness.
