In buddhism, the physical body is just an external object(establish through one own merit and karma) as the soul can reincarnate into various form including as animal. therefore it wasn't any surprise for our soul to be a male in next life as bodhisattva and buddha can appear in either male or female form to deliver sentient beings.(in lotus sutra, the dragon princess attain enlightenment and right on the spot reborn as a male after hearing the lotus sutra teaching).
